FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is a standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically, and it has been promoted by NHS England / NHSX as the strategic standard for APIs in the NHS.
The core FHIR standard is an international standard defined by HL7 - click here for the documentation of the FHIR standard.
We initially adopted the NHS-specific CareConnect profiles of FHIR for accessing the data in the shared care record, which are based on the STU3 version of FHIR, and have implemented APIs that conform to the CareConnect API guidance for ReST APIs using FHIR.
More recently we have been heavily involved in the development of the newer UK Core specification with NHS England, which is based on the newer FHIR R4 standard, and we are in the process of migrating to this newer standard.
We are delivering support for each of the UK Core profiles and interactions in a rolling programme – for details of the FHIR interactions currently supported, please see our FHIR Implementation Guide
